Expert Authentication for Vintage Chinese Watches

Vintage Chinese Watches specialises exclusively in the authentication of vintage Chinese timepieces. Every watch we inspect is carefully examined to determine originality, authenticity, condition, and collectability.

Our authentication process includes:

  • Verification of the movement, case, dial, hands, crown, and bracelet or strap
  • Inspection of reference numbers, serial numbers, and production markings
  • Examination of engravings, hallmarks, and manufacturer signatures
  • Review of any accompanying paperwork, receipts, service records, or provenance
  • Assessment of originality, replacement parts, and period-correct components
  • Identification of restored, refinished, modified, or non-original elements
  • Evaluation of the watch’s overall condition and recommendations for servicing or conservation
  • Optional market valuation for insurance, or resale purposes

When physically inspecting a watch, we open the case and examine the movement and internal components to verify authenticity and determine whether the watch remains true to its original configuration.

Online Authentication Fees

Includes a professional assessment of authenticity, originality, and condition and a formal letter containing:

  • Watch reference and identifying details
  • Authentication findings

The written report is suitable for personal records, insurance documentation, and supporting future resale. Reports are generally emailed within two business days following inspection.

Why Authentication Matters

The market for vintage Chinese watches has grown rapidly in recent years. Unfortunately, this growth has also attracted counterfeiters and opportunistic sellers. Newly manufactured reproductions, forged pieces, heavily restored examples, and so-called “franken watches” assembled from parts of multiple watches have become increasingly common.

Based on our experience, approximately two-thirds of vintage Chinese watches offered online contain authenticity issues or undisclosed modifications. On international marketplaces and foreigner-facing websites, the percentage can be even higher.

Unlike modern watches, vintage Chinese timepieces from the 1950s through the 1980s often lack original documentation and have passed through several owners over many decades. Many have been serviced repeatedly, with components replaced, refinished, or exchanged over time. Determining authenticity therefore requires specialised knowledge and extensive hands-on experience.

What We Look For

Authenticating a vintage watch is part technical examination and part detective work. We assess numerous details that are often overlooked by buyers and sellers.

Dial and Patina

Natural aging, commonly known as patina, develops over decades through exposure to light, humidity, and environmental conditions. Genuine aging tends to be subtle and consistent, whereas artificially aged dials often display exaggerated or unnatural characteristics.

Luminous Material

Vintage Chinese watches used different luminous compounds throughout their production history. We examine the colour, texture, and consistency of lume on both the dial and hands. Mismatched or artificially aged lume can indicate restoration, replacement parts, or forgery.

Case and Bracelet Wear

Authentic vintage watches develop wear patterns that correspond to decades of use. Scratches, softened edges, and bracelet stretch should appear in logical places and be consistent with the watch’s age and history. Artificial distressing often reveals itself through irregular or exaggerated wear patterns.

Movement Examination

The movement is frequently the most important element of authentication. We inspect finishing, markings, production characteristics, and signs of alteration or replacement. Internal inspection can reveal details that are impossible to determine from photographs alone.

Originality and Configuration

Many vintage watches contain service replacement parts or components taken from other watches. Although these parts may be genuine, they can significantly affect collectability and market value. We determine whether the watch remains in its original and historically correct configuration.

Why Professional Authentication Is Essential

Professional authentication combines years of experience, extensive reference archives, and the examination of thousands of vintage watches. Understanding production variations, factory specifications, and historical manufacturing practices enables us to identify issues that may not be apparent even to experienced collectors.

The cost of authentication is small compared with the potential financial consequences of purchasing a misrepresented watch. Rare vintage Chinese watches can command substantial prices, and an inaccurate assessment may result in significant financial loss.

More importantly, authentication protects the historical integrity of these remarkable timepieces. Vintage Chinese watches are not merely collectibles—they are important pieces of horological history that deserve careful preservation and accurate documentation.

Important Notice Regarding Online Authentication

Remote authentication is conducted solely on the basis of the photographs and documentation provided. It is therefore issued as a professional remote authentication opinion.

While our online assessments are highly accurate and widely relied upon by collectors and buyers, certain aspects of authentication—particularly internal mechanical details and hidden modifications—may only be conclusively verified through physical inspection of the watch.

Where appropriate, we may recommend a full in-person authentication to provide the highest level of certainty.
