Shanghai Watch Factory sits at the center of China’s modern watchmaking story, emerging in the 1950s as the country’s first full-fledged domestic watch manufacturer and a symbol of industrial self-reliance. More broadly, Shanghai’s watch landscape also encompasses brands such as Diamond, Chunlei, and Baoshihua, along with numerous component makers and workshops that collectively made the city China’s principal horological hub. Together, these companies trace Shanghai’s evolution from a market for imported timepieces and small repair shops into the birthplace of a national industry, later shaped by mass production, state planning, quartz disruption, and a recent revival of heritage-driven craftsmanship.
